What fur care does my dog require?
When choosing a dog breed, it is important that you familiarize yourself with fur care in advance, as there is a very big difference in what the different breeds require. Some dogs only need a quick brushing once a week, while others require many hours of combing and clipping.
You should always read up on the specific breed you have chosen, but the following can be a very good guideline in relation to brushing:
- Short, smooth coat : Brushed once a week; for example with a boar bristle brush
- Short, rough coat : Brushed several times a week; make sure you reach the bottom
- Long, smooth coat : Combed several times a week. Remove tangled hair with a carder and then comb with a metal comb
- Curly fur : Brush several times a week with a carde
Washing, cutting and trimming
In addition to being brushed, some dogs require extra fur care. All dogs benefit from a bath every now and then; especially after a dirty walk in the woods or on the beach. If your dog's fur doesn't require a lot of care, you can just wash it in a good dog shampoo that suits the fur type.
Poodles and some other breeds with long or curly fur require baths at regular intervals, and here you should use conditioner for dogs to facilitate brushing and combing. These breeds will also need to be clipped and trimmed, which typically requires a visit to a professional dog groomer. You can, of course, take care of the haircut yourself, but it requires some proper equipment, and partly that you have a handle on how your dog breed should be cut.
Brush your dog's teeth
Just as humans need their teeth brushed to prevent cavities or gingivitis, so do dogs. There are just many dog owners who are not aware of this. Of course, wild dogs don't get their teeth brushed, but here dental care is fixed via bones, branches and other natural things, which are not always part of a family dog's everyday life. In addition, wild dogs often get bad teeth as a natural part of their lives. That doesn't have to be the case for your dog.
Buy a good dog toothpaste and apply with your finger and apply to the dog's teeth or use a soft toothbrush. Your dog should get used to it right from puppyhood. If it is a dog that is not used to having its teeth brushed, you can instead make sure to offer branches to gnaw on, chew bones or treats for dental care.
