Hemp bedding, Clean Hemp - the best ground cover for rabbits, birds and rodents
At Us with pets you will find a large selection of natural hay, straw and litter for rodents. Choose e.g. ground cover for rodents of various sizes or delicious hay from Vitakraft. You should always have bedding in your rodent cage to create a natural environment for your rodent and to facilitate the cleaning of the cage.
The bedding should be changed 1-2 times a week as needed. Put extra bedding in if your rodent eats it, or replace parts of it if it has become wet or dirty.
Therefore, there must be bedding in the rodent cage
It is important for your rodent's well-being that it does not just roam around in an empty cage. It is more natural to move around in bottom litter such as e.g. straw or other natural ground cover. The litter is also used to make nests and burrows where the rodent can hide.
Regardless of which rodent it is, bedding will be a necessity in the cage to ensure that the animal thrives. In part, it protects the animal's paws against the hard bottom of the cage. In addition, litter naturally offers the opportunity to dig and build nests. Finally, bottom-filled liquid sucks from the animal's remains, so that the rodent does not have to stay in a wet and humid environment, which can make it sick.
Some types of bedding can be used for all rodents, while others are more suitable for certain rodents, among other things depending on their size.
Which floor covering should I choose?
The general recommendation is to avoid litter that dusts and thus risks affecting your rodent's airways. However, there are exceptions, such as desert rats. However, many rodents also enjoy taking a sand bath, and it may therefore be a good idea to offer a sand bath in a corner, possibly in a hill. The rest of the cage should be filled with bottom bedding such as straw or wrap, but other types of bedding can also be used, depending on the type of rodent. Examples of other bedding for rodents include sawdust, shavings, wood chips and hay.
Be aware that straw, hay and dried grass are at risk of being eaten. It is quite reliable for a number of rodents, but some types of rodents cannot tolerate eating hay and straw, so you must be aware of your choice in relation to the rodent you have.
If you are in doubt about which type of bedding to choose, you can always consult a veterinarian, but on this page you can also read under the individual products which rodents the bedding is suitable for.
