Take care of your dog in the winter cold
There are divided opinions about outerwear for dogs, but the truth is that many smaller dog breeds cannot cope in the Danish winter cold without a dog blanket as a minimum. This is because certain breeds do not have an undercoat, and therefore cannot keep warm on their own when the temperatures are very low and when it is damp or wet outside.
Small dogs should wear the blanket at temperatures below 5 degrees
As a rule, small dog breeds should not go for a walk when the temperature is below 5 degrees according to the chill factor, where wind and humidity are taken into account, while for medium-sized dog breeds it only becomes critical below the freezing point and for large dog breeds at -10 degrees. However, it must be taken into account that dog breeds without undercoat will be most exposed, and small and slender dogs or hairless dogs may need outerwear long before the temperature drops to 5 degrees.
- Consider the blanket for small dogs at 5 degrees
- Consider the blanket for medium-sized dogs at 0 degrees
- Consider the blanket for large dogs at -10 degrees
For the above, you should of course look at your dog and use your common sense, but in addition the following can be good guidelines:
- Add 1 degree to the temperature if the dog has thick fur or is used to the cold
- Subtract 2 degrees from the temperature if the weather is wet
When the temperature gets so low, which it often is in Denmark during autumn, winter and spring, you must either keep your dog indoors (except for ultra-short trips to pee) or help your dog to keep warm on the walk with a blanket or a jacket. The latter is preferable for the vast majority of dogs, as they will thrive best by getting out and getting some stimuli.
Dog blanket against anxiety
Another type of blanket is a dog blanket against anxiety. The purpose here is not to keep the dog warm and dry, but to keep it calm and relaxed. For example, at New Year's, when many dogs become stressed and anxious, but also during thunder, transport or other situations where the dog becomes nervous. The cover is also called Thundershirt and is available for both dogs and cats.
The Thundershirt gives the dog constant and gentle pressure inspired by acupressure. Persistent pressure is a well-known relief of anxiety, which has been used for many years by both humans and animals, and which has also been shown to have a very good effect in the form of the dog blanket.
