Get bird life in the garden

Nothing is more summery than chirping birds in the garden, which is a sound most people like. The birds search for places where they can find sufficient food, water and nesting opportunities, so if you would like to have a musical visit and not only when it is cold, this is what you need to provide.

Make sure:

  • A birdhouse / storage for the feed
  • Good quality feed all year round
  • Water (especially in the hot summer months)

A birdhouse can be a good idea. On the one hand, you avoid uninvited guests such as rats and mice, who are tempted by feed that is thrown on the ground, and on the other hand, the smaller bird and feed houses protect the large birds of prey, which are typically not nearly as welcome - and which also chase the small birds away or eat their eggs.

If you want something more discreet, you can get automatic game bird feeders, which in practice are a fenced box that you can hang in a tree and where you can place feed or feed pellets. Only the small birds can fly through to get in for the feed.

Lure squirrels

Are you also one of those who can spend hours studying the small, but shy, furry guests who are especially attracted to larger gardens and outdoor areas with the possibility of privacy? Especially if you have pine trees located on your property, you may be lucky enough to have a squirrel move in.

When autumn is coming to an end, and there is no longer as much food for the squirrel to come after, you can advantageously set up a squirrel restaurant in one of your favorite trees and fill it with squirrel food at regular intervals. The advantage of the squirrel restaurant is that you can watch on the sidelines when the squirrel comes down to eat the feed.

Would you like to be surprised?

Put some peanuts out in the garden and see who is attracted to them. Maybe it's birds, maybe it's mice or squirrels. On hot days, it can also be a good idea to put a bowl of water out in the garden, which all the animals in the garden can enjoy; from hedgehogs to birds that both want to drink from and bathe in the water.

Especially on very hot summer days, the animals can suffer if they do not have access to water, and therefore it is advisable to put them out a little. If you already have animals such as a dog, cat or poultry, there will typically be water outside anyway, which the wild animals will also enjoy. However, make sure to change the water for your pets more often if, for example, shared with the garden birds, so that the water does not have to be drunk dirty.
